A quiet weekend started the new month, on Tuesday I was supposed to be at the hospital but the appointment was postponed (the old "unforeseen circumstances" bit). It was rescheduled for September 8 (this has been going on since March but what's another FIVE WEEKS between friends??), in the afternoon they called to tell me there was no evidence of anything malignant from Friday's visit so at least there's THAT much. In the evening I was at the ballpark, the Stormers opened a short three-game set with the Staten Island FerryHawks. The Stormers' schedule consists of sixteen six-game series and ten three-game sets, the High Point Rockers visit for three games on the weekend. The Hawks were in town in late April but between hockey in Reading and adverse weather I missed that series entirely. SI is struggling through one of the poorer seasons in league history, through their first ninety games they have just sixteen wins (we're talking ALPB Road Warriors territory here). On this night the Stormers went up 1-0 on a first-inning double from Tristan English, the lead was extended to five in the second on a David Smith two-run homer and consecutive sac flies by English and Corey Rosier. The Hawks did not back down, they fought back with two in the fourth and three in the fifth to tie it 5-5. The deadlock was finally broken in the home eighth, Joseph Carpenter hit a BB over the batters' eye in center field to put the Stormers ahead 6-5. In the ninth newcomer Lenny Torres shut the door for the save, Phil Diehl was the winner in relief of starter Kyle Laser. Take care, thanks for reading.
