July 8

Monday morning at the mall for lunch, in the evening at Reservoir Park as we (finally) wrapped up the Spring street hockey season. The Union Station Kings and Dominion Pizza lined up for the fifth and deciding game of the West Division finals. The Kings won the first two games but two straight postponements after that seemed to derail their momentum as Dominion Pizza rallied to tie the series. On this night the Kings got out to a 3-0 lead and won it 4-2 to claim their second straight title, they met Dominion Pizza in the Fall 2012 West finals as well. It's actually quite a story: the Kings are largely an older group, back in the 80s and 90s they were one of the league's top teams. In the Spring of 2012 they reunited after a long absence for what was intended to be a one-season reunion tour, the guys enjoyed being back together and playing again so much that they kept it together for what is now a third season. Back-to-back titles indicate that although the reflexes and foot-speed may not be what it was the instincts for playing the game never go away. It's like swimming or riding a bicycle, once you learn how you never forget. We must also give due respect to Dominion Pizza, they could have folded the tent when they were down 0-2 but they showed their mettle proudly, It won't be long until we're back at the rink, the Fall season will be starting in September. Take care, thanks for reading.
